3 MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN CHOOSING EHR SOFTWARE

Derek Seymour • April 7, 2020

NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU NEED IN EHR SOFTWARE

Take time to understand the solution you need before choosing any software. Determine if you need fully integrated EHR software or best-of-breed software. Usually, the decision will depend on the challenges you want to solve, the structure of your practice, and the opportunities you want to seize.

For example, small and medium sized practices should consider fully integrated EHR software because this type of system can enable you to streamline your processes and improve productivity without breaking the bank.

CHOOSING THE WRONG EHR SOFTWARE VENDOR

When in the market for EHR software, picking the right vendor can mean the difference between an effective implementation and getting one that falls short of your practice’s needs.

Managers often assume that “big name” vendors guarantee big returns on investment. But some giant healthcare software companies are too large to provide specialized industry knowledge for small and medium sized practices. Choosing a vendor with in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry can help you achieve rapid deployment, cost effectiveness and increased efficiency.

NOT INVESTING IN EHR SOFTWARE FOR THE LONG-TERM

When choosing EHR software, have realistic expectations of the costs and remember you’re investing to improve your business. Keep in mind that low cost solutions usually result in massive long-term payments. As such, choose a software developer who can provide quick and effective implementation, high returns on investment, and low total cost of ownership after implementation.

Also, look for software that can help you achieve your practice’s goals. Most importantly, work within your budget, and ensure you understand what you’re receiving upfront and anticipate when to expect the first return on your investment.
