DENTISTS ARE CREATING MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICES

Derek Seymour • Oct 24, 2019

People from all walks of life are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of preserving the environment, and many are making use of environmentally-friendly technologies. This includes many people who work in the field of dentistry. In fact, environmentally-friendly dental tools have been created to be used in offices and by patients at home!

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF GREEN DENTAL PRODUCTS?

Toothbrushes don’t need to be made with plastic handles, and they can be made with bamboo. No toothbrush will last forever, and if it has a plastic handle, it will not fully biodegrade until many decades or even centuries pass. However, bamboo will biodegrade much faster, which helps to fight pollution. Plastic items, such as plastic toothbrushes, could take as long as 1,000 years to biodegrade! However, bamboo will biodegrade at the same rate as any other type of wood.

Charcoal toothpaste can whiten teeth without using synthetic chemicals. Not only does this prevent potentially harmful chemicals from making their way into the environment, but it can help to protect your health from unknown effects of synthetic chemicals that are commonly used in conventional toothpaste.

Also, dentists are increasingly recycling various non-reusable materials that are used by dentists, which can help to prevent the build-up of non-biodegradable waste. Fortunately, the non-reusable materials that are used by many dentists, such as plastic barriers, can be recycled into a wide range of items.

DENTISTS ARE CONSERVING RESOURCES  & PREVENTING POLLUTION

Many dentists are beginning to use energy-saving chairs and equipment, which can reduce electricity usage considerably. Furthermore, more and more dentists are going paperless, which can considerably reduce their production of waste. While mercury plays an important role in the creation of many types of fillings, dentists are becoming increasingly aware of its potential to harm the environment. As a result, steps are being taken to prevent mercury from getting into the environment.

THE FIELD OF DENTISTRY WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THESE ADVANCEMENTS

Dentists will continue to become even more aware of the importance of protecting the environment as years go on, which is likely to lead to many new technologies that reduce pollution and conserve resources. Make sure that you keep up to date on the latest environmentally-friendly technologies to ensure that your practice leaves as small of an ecological footprint as possible, which may be one of the most helpful tips for dentists in the future.
